My kids love TV and I’ve always been consistent about monitoring what shows they watch. When they were little, I’d preview all of the popular children’s shows and determine which ones I could tolerate and which I could not. My kids had barely even heard of Caillou, The Wiggles and Barney until they were almost in kindergarten!
Of course, now that they’re older, it’s impossible to limit their viewing to only shows that I like. They have their own ideas about what interests them so, as long as shows are age-appropriate and family-friendly, they are allowed to choose their own programming. For the most part, I don’t mind their picks… a few of them are actually really great. The shows that I encourage are those that teach them something – math, english, kindness, teamwork… whatever! If there’s a good message and an educational element, I’m all for it! So, in the spirit of educating and empowering our kids, check out my top three picks this month for great kids’ programming.
Julie’s Greenroom
Starring the incomparable Julie Andrews, this show for young children is rich in the arts and demonstrates how creativity can have a positive impact on every child. With lots of special guests (Idina Menzel, Sara Bareilles, and Alec Baldwin to name a few) Julie’s Greenroom is a show for kids, but that parents will love just as much.
Beat Bugs
This upbeat show is about five friends who learn life lessons from the safety of their neighbourhood. Parents and kids alike will love the catchy sing-alongs, featuring nostalgic hits from The Beatles. (Yes, the BEATLES!! Awesome, right?!)
Project MC2
My 10-year-old daughter loves this miniseries that unlocks young girls’ interests in science, technology and coding. These girls are smart, fierce – and not afraid to show it!
