I, on the other hand, am definitely not a pro in the kitchen, so when I was given the chance to try out a Cutco knife, of which I had heard legendary stories – “My mother/aunt/grandmother has had hers for 50 years!” – I was thrilled.
While I am a pretty good cook, my skills leave little to be desired. (My husband is always reminding me of the “safe” way to cut veggies, fruit, etc. so I don’t end up slicing myself, so I’ve thought about going to a weekend session at a local culinary school to learn proper knife-cutting techniques. But, I must admit, when I first used my Cutco Santoku 7″ knife, I felt like it was at home in my hand. There was no weird, awkward fumbling or adjusting it in my palm until I found the sweet spot. It somehow just “fit” me. I think it has to do with the handle; it’s a carved, shaped handle that feels very natural. It’s also perfectly weighted. The blade is balanced just so, and the weight distribution is such that I don’t feel like it’s going to tilt forward when I’m using it. The blade is super-sharp and cuts through everything with total ease.

So comfortable in my hand! |
Now, because I’m not the expert when it comes to knives, I asked my husband to give me his thoughts on the Santoku and he said it was the best knife he’s ever used… and he doesn’t pull any punches! He’s the one who has always taken the time to sharpen our knives, because he hates using dull blades. And, he’s far pickier when it comes to the implements he uses, so when he said this knife was amazing, it completely validated everything I thought about it too.
In case you’re not familiar with Cutco, they have manufactured knives since 1949. They’re made in America from high-carbon stainless steel and come with their (almost unbelievable) “Forever Guarantee”. Yes, you heard me correctly!! They will not only sharpen kitchen tools for life, but will replace an item if you aren’t satisfied with its performance. My mother-in-law has a few Cutco knives, which she swears by, and has never had an issue sending them in for complimentary sharpening.
Now, obviously, quality products like this aren’t your run-of-the-mill department store specials, so you pay more initially.…but your investment lasts a lifetime. I’m all about being frugal and, in my opinion, having to buy something only once is the smart way to go.
I love my Santoku knife from Cutco and think you would too. It’s the perfect all-purpose chef’s knife for any kitchen and it would also make a great gift for the culinary king or queen on your Christmas list – or anyone that’s hard to buy for. (I mean, who couldn’t use a great knife?)
Win it!
